Former NC State All-American Shortstop Trea Turner broke the index finger on his throwing hand on a bunt attempt last night in the 1st inning, ruling him out indefinitely.

“It’s never fun,” Turner said. “Doesn’t matter if it’s the first game or the last game of the year — injuries aren’t fun. Takes you out of the lineup, takes you out of the game and you just want to be out there competing. Not fun, but it is what it is.”

“I couldn’t move it,” Turner said. “I’ve never had anything dislocated, so I figured that’s what it was. I think it might have been a combination of that. Also, with a break, I’m not really sure, but I couldn’t move it, so I knew something wasn’t good.”

Turner was off to a blazing start in 2019, batting .357 with 2 home runs, 4 RBI’s, 4 runs, and 4 stolen bases in 3 games.

This is a huge loss for the Nationals. With the exodus of Bryce Harper, Turner is an anchor in Washington’s lineup. To pour salt in the wound, the Nats opponent last night was Harper’s Phillies, who defeated them 8-2.
